Seminex Corp. is pleased to team up with Thermshield LLC to deliver high-power laser diodes with integrated convection cooling.  SemiNex  now offers Thermshield heat sinks as a standard options on its Multi-Chip Modules to efficiently deliver up to 25 watts of laser power.

SemiNex’s top-of-the-line Multi-Chip Modules (MCM) integrate up to seven semiconductor laser chips, aiming beam, thermister, and optical power monitors with Thermshields patented conductive cooling.  The beauty of SemiNex’s MCM is that it is extremely versitile and easy to use and incorporate in industrial and medical systems.  With minimal system changes, customers can incorporate the SemiNex’s module into existing laser platform designs. This enables customers to implement longer 14xx and 15xx nm wavelengths into their product lines in record time with minimal cost.

“SemiNex is recognized as the world leader in high-power laser diodes at long wavelengths.  With the addition of integrated cooling from Thermshield, SemiNex products are now readily deployed in the field with minimal engineering effort required,”  states David Bean, President of SemiNex Corp.

The SemiNex MCM-1470-6-ICS offers 25 watts of fiber-coupled power and is ideal for medical, military, industrial, and free space optical communication applications.  This  SemiNex product provides  up to 25 watts of optical power while extracting up to 200 watts of thermal heat.

Dr. John Callahan, VP of Development for SemiNex states, “the system is designed to be used right out of the box; the customer just adds electrical drive controls and any desired optical collimation or handpiece on the standard SMA fiber-connector.  This will save system designers weeks of development time and significant development costs.”

When applied to SemiNex’s laser packages, the Thermshield heat sinks act as an integrated cooling unit to regulate temperature for extended use. This compact cooling system can be easily integrated with any existing controls and laser driver to reduce design time required to manage the heat. The heat sink uses advanced imbedded heat-pipes to dynamically distribute the heat thoroughout the heat sink, and forced convection dissapate the heat to the atmosphere.  “Thermshield cooling solutions provide enormous space and energy savings as compared to conventional water-cooled solutions,” said Christopher Soule, Engineering Director of Thermshield.  “This is a cost-effective alternative to more traditional water-cooled systems requiring an external chiller and entensive maintenance over the life of the system.”

“We are very happy with the successful integration of SemiNex Multi-Chip Modules with Thermshield’s Heat sinks,” says President David Bean, “We expect this to be the first of many laser subsystems with integrated cooling, and we look forward to delighting our customers with affordable and convenient cooled laser solutions.”

SemiNex MCM products are offered with optical power levels of 10, 15, 20 and 25 watts.  Standard wavelengths include: 1450, 1470, 1532, and 1550 nm.  Systems include optical monitors, and optional 650nm aiming beam and thermistor.  For a full list of products and services see www.seminex.com.
